We have driven past the volcano Hekla today and walked up to the glacier snout.
By the end of the day, there were a lot of drowned but happy rats in the party........

Our itinerary is as follows -
Saturday 14 February
Leave Botanical Gardens at 1pm
Depart Stansted Airport at 9.25pm on Iceland Express Flight AEU156
Arrive at Keflavik Airport at 12.25am
Transfer to Hotel Cabin
Sunday 15 February
After breakfast at the hotel, visit to the Reykjanes Peninsula and the Blue Lagoon. Drive through lava formations and geothermal fields at Krysuvik. Walk through the bubbling mud pools and steaming vents then on to Grindavik to view the cliffs, harbour and the fishing fleet. Bathe in the outdoor Blue Lagoon amid clouds of vapour. Possible visit to the Kringlan Shopping Mall on the return journey. At leisure after evening meal in the hotel
Monday 16 February
After breakfast at the hotel, we travel south to the wild sandy coastline at Eyrarbakki, with its numerous historical wooden buildings. Continue to Stokkseyri, built on the 8,000 year old Thjorsa lava flow, and through rich farmlands. From here on a clear day you can see the famous shield volcano of Mount Hekla. We then travel around the base of Mount Eyjafjoll past the spectacular waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skogarfoss, visiting the Skogar Waterfall, above which can be seen the white heights of the glacier of Eyjafjallajokull. We continue to the glacial outwash plains and basalt columns near Vík. Above the hills rises Myrdalsjokull glacier under which lies Katla, one of Iceland's most notorious volcanos. *Visits to a glacier are strictly subject to weather and road conditions and at the discretion of your guide.
Evening meal in the Laugar Café Restaurant, adjacent to the swimming pool. A swim in the pool is included and it is open until 10pm
Tuesday 17 February
After breakfast at the hotel we head towards Thingvellir National Park and explore this ancient open air meeting place of the Vikings. It is an area of great geological interest where the forces of plate tectonics are clearly visible. We then travel on to Geysir to see Strokkur, the hot geyser that spouts up to 20m every few minutes. Around the site are many colourful hot springs, steaming vents, warm streams with psychedelic algae and mineral deposits. Included in the tour is a visit to the Geysir Centre. We continue to the rainbow misted waterfall at Gullfoss, renowned for its breathtaking beauty; then on to the Kerid Crater to see the 55m deep lake that fills the extinct volcano. En route, we drive through the village of Hveragerdi, where natural hot springs heat greenhouses full of tropical fruit, vegetables, salads and flowers. Finally, we make a stop at Hellisheidi Hydro Power Plant, where we will have a short talk on Geothermal Energy. Optional stop off in Reykjavik for a visit of the city centre and shopping on the way back
Evening meal at the Ruby Tuesday Restaurant with the remainder of the evening at leisure.

Arrive Stansted 10.25pm
Return to Botanical Gardens at approximately 2.30pm
